Mountain Man Rendezvous 2014: Save The Date

Brethren,
Please save the date for the 2014 Mountain Man Rendezvous, which is Friday, March 14 to Saturday, March 15, at Camp Three Falls. The point person for this year's MMR is Dave Albee, from our Stake YM Presidency.
There will be much more information coming out in the weeks ahead, but we are hoping to get this to you in time for your stake calendaring purposes.
We are looking once again to have a great experience with you and your youth. If there are any questions or input, please feel free to let us know.

President Peterson would like every ward to take a night with the scouts and celebrate 100 years of scouting.
He has asked that you watch the church broadcast with your scouts.
This is a big deal so please give it its due honor.

Mountain Man Update - Important

Gentlemen and Brethren,

>> Here << is a form that is in addition to the packet that was previously sent.  >> This << waiver needs to be completed for each young man, in addition to the other forms that were sent. If you have a scout who is injured and will not be able to participate in Colter's Run, but who wants to participate in MMR, please keep in mind that these scouts can participate in the Mountain Man Costume Contest. Also, our Cannon Master has asked for volunteers to assist with the "Cannoneering" at MMR, so please let me know if you have this situation and a young man who wants to participate.

Please note that this year we will be factoring your participation in the Dutch Oven Cook-off and the Mountain Man Costume Contest into the final score or time that it takes each team/crew to run the course.  Here's how participation will factor in:

Dutch Oven Cooking will be judged on:
  • Presentation (5 points max)
  • Creativity (5 points max)
  • Taste (10 points max)
  • For a total of 20 points maximum.
The team or crew that places first in this cook-off will have 1.5 minutes deducted from their Colter's Run time; second place will have 1 minute deducted; third place will have 45 seconds deducted and each participating team that does not place in the top 3 will have 30 seconds deducted.

Mountain Man Costume Contest will be scored or judged using the following criteria; Each participant must make a reasonable effort to reflect dress/costuming of the mountain man of the 1800's. Each participant must have at least three (3) articles of mountain man regalia, equipment/tools, dress or costuming reflective of the 1800's mountain man to qualify.
  • First place will have 1.5 minutes deducted from his team/crew Colter's Run time
  • Second place will have 1 minute deducted
  • Third place will have 45 seconds deducted
  • Team participation deduction: Each team/crew that participates will have 30 seconds deducted from their Colter's Run time (in order to get the team participation deduction, at least 1/2 of the registered members of a team/crew must participate with the minimum qualifying criteria listed above). Note that only one mountain man costume contest deduction per team /crew will be allowed.
Participants in the Mountain Man Costume Contest do not need to run the course in their mountain man costumes.

Here is a photograph of a mountain man to help give you an idea of what types of costume or regalia can be used:

Both the Dutch Oven Cook-off and the Mountain Man Costume Contest will be judged at the discretion of those that have been selected to judge each of these events.

This dance brings youth from all over making it a large group who enjoys each others company and eagerly welcome new friends. Please encourage your youth to attend these great events so they can be at the right place, at the right time, with the right people!

Also- the flier does not include the information about a

SPEED DATING ACTIVITY for Priests and Laurels prior to the dance at 7:30. Root Beer floats will be served.

This has been done successfully in the past and the kids always have fun with it.

Are You Tough Enough for Whitsett?

Are YOU Tougher Than a Boy Scout?

Make sure you tune in this Monday, March 4th at 8PM to watch the new National Geographic realityseries in which adults who never reached the rank of Eagle test their mettle against young Eagle Scouts at the top of their game. In the show, contestants compete in challenges drawn from Merit Badges and outdoor Boy Scout skills to see if the adults can match the skills and traits required to be an Eagle Scout. Producers of the show, who are also behind Deadliest Catch and Ice Road Truckers, had to find a location to host the show for activities such as Whitewater rafting, rappelling, wilderness navigation and canoe jousting (admittedly a new addition to the Boy Scout skill set). They chose our own Camp Whitsett, which rests in the heights of the Sequoia National Monument near Lake Ida and the mighty Kern River, because its traditional Mountain Camp ambiance and rugged terrain could challenge even the most practiced outdoorsman.

Test Your Mettle This Summer at Camp Whitsett!

Campers at Whitsett this summer will get to see if they are tough enough for Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout by taking on the Tough Enough Challenge. In order to earn the Tough Enough patch, campers will have to complete several challenges from Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout. These events will pair skills tested on the show such as Climbing, Shooting, natural navigation, obstacle courses, and pioneering. Make sure you take advantage of this opportunity to take the challenge in the very same location where the show was filmed!
